In my opinion this is more a matter of style than quality. I for example find Boosh's style very cluttered and not very appealing visually, but I know many disagree. Oliver (and newIdea too) on the other hand almost always designs very neatly (not to mention creatively) and without too many objects scattered around, which I like, although others might prefer someone like Boosh's designs.
If you look at my cut-scene entry you can see this taste in the way I set it out.

I see where you're attacking Julius. Although Oliver's games (and noIdea, his identical twin) are beautiful with just the right amount of EyE-cAnDy, I still feel that Boosh has an interesting way of designing. Cluttered? I would disagree, but I really enjoy his atmosphere in his games. Atmosphere is included when you say map design, right? If you look at my cut-scene entry you can see this taste in the way I set it out.I know exactly what you mean. However, I would like to see a game with more diversity (perhaps outside of Earth, maybe with a mod). Edit: I'm not voting, there's too many options that I like.

Haha, yes I did notice that...and in the PbP 2 as well. But I do like that particular way of designing forests and landscape. I feel it makes the terrain look more...tangible or real. Hmm, I agree with Turty, a difficult choice. I think I might have to ponder on this one for a bit.

nI's design is atmospheric, I must say. His square on PbP2 (the one with three fairy-like creatres) really caught my attention the most. The combination of dirt 3, jungle bushes and gaia trees works perfectly to make something that can please the eyes. And yes, when I first saw the design in Julius' Ominous Silence, nI's design is the first thing that comes to mind).
However, my most favorite would be Shadows' style of design, especially in his Swallowed Realms II (which in my opinion is the peak of his success). The hill where the three heroes begin their journey is made nicely, with a combination of dirt, desert, gaia objects and trees. A pretty sight to my liking. This is in fact the one that most influence the style that I'm using in the first episode of FAF.

Crasher's map designing is phenomenal. It is atmospheric and very style-based. Look at A Different World, A Lost World, Attack at Dawn and Eye of the Beholder, which is part of Immortel Prey. Shadows for Shadow Mind 3 is also very cool and atmospheric. Also, Andan, Dave Earl added the fairies in newIdea's square as nI had virtually nothing in his square but trees and grass.
