Let's try to explain : the french R is what's called in phonetics (part of LINGUISTICS, ;D)an uvular consonant. That means pronounced with the back of the tongue against or near the uvula, that is, further back in the mouth than the English or Russian R. In other words, you have to put only the back of you tongue very close to your 'velum palatinum', that' s the soft top back of your palate, then let some air pass through it. EXERCICE here, hope this will help you. Hurray for Science, and don't you worry cos' the French think it quite charming when you use the English R, actually.

No, it's not difficult at all, and according to my English friends I pronounce it properly, both in 'this' or 'three'. Where to put the stress is more a problem, when you haven't heard the word before. They say I've a slight German (or Australian sometimes) accent, no more.
Now remember, I'm not a 'real' French, so no wonder. Real Frenchies can't manage the vowels, the final 'ing' and 'ell', properly neither : " Wale, eet eez zat seenge zat's deefeekolt foR zeim'
But I can sham French accent perfectly well, in case you need my voice acting, in one of your soundtracks !

Thanks, Sissi. I can do it somewhat, but I still sound like a zergling. BTW, how different are the accents between northern and southern France? From what I've heard, the south has a lot of Spanish influence (like rolling their R's)...

No, only very old people still roll the R,( not only in the South) and aliens . And that's considered as a bit .. er... let's say agricultural. Unless you're Russian, then they call it charming. Otherwise yes, there are differences of accent in differents regions. In fact every region has an accent, in Alsace they pronounce it like German. And also, yes North and South of France have recognisable differences. Consequences of History : Langue d'Oc vs Langue d'Oï. I won't elaborate here, it could take ages ... The most known abroad is the accent from South-East (Marseille in particular), but it has naught to do with Spanish, rather Italian. It's more "musical", and they pronounce all the mute E, and often add a 'ing' at the end of words with 'in' ending, (wich sounds a bit like the English in 'sing' btw). And what is a Zergling ?

I really not very good at explaining this kind of stuff, especially not in English that uses very few words with å/ä/ö sounds. But the closest you can get is by using French; Ör ~= heur, sted (the d is often not pronounced at all, although it remains in the written version). I'm quite sure that's a Danish town name though, and I don't know how much it actually helps.

There's no ö at all in English, but there's one in German and most Nordic Languages, like in "böse" , or Österreich (sometimes spelled oe, too). The same sounds exists also in French, Turkish, Finnish ,Estonian, Hungarian...just in case you know one of them. Otherwise, when you say e in 'Percival' in English, just put your lips a bit more closed and form a little O with them, while keeping your tongue down.
Zergling...(after some Google search) You mean the Starwar thingy ? I've never seen that movie anyway.

Now you shocked me even more. I am astonished that someone in a forum for RTS would not know Starcraft.

TBH, I didn't know of Starcraft when I started playing AoE.
A zergling is just a weird, non-threatening monster thing (well, individually, they aren't very threatening).

I confess! I don't know what a zergling is and I've never played Starcraft. Is that really so very terrible?

I confess! I don't know what a zergling is and I've never played Starcraft. Is that really so very terrible? It isn't. But Starcraft is frequently quoted as one of the 'top ten' RTS games of all time , along with Age of Empires. Others in that list are Command and Conquer, Rise of Nations, Warcraft 3, Empire Earth, Total Annihilation, etc. I confess I have played most of 'em.

Starcraft,Stargate, Starwars, Startrek...No, I don't know what those things actually are ( ain't got no TV, and don't play games, it's booooring). Stuff for children,I suppose ? Er...and what's RTS, btw ? (since I'm apparently commiting virtual suicide, at least let's learn sth...)

Real Time Strategy, the kind of game AoK is, when all players play at the same time instead of taking turns, not as in real board games like Risk where you play in turns around the table. I've never played Starcraft, only seen two of the Star Wars movies a few years ago, only seen Stargate once or twice. I never got into any of them, when it comes to sci-fi Babylon 5 is my favourite pick, and even of that I'm no huge fan
