Hello! It’s me again! Your most adored design deity, now turned renowned strategy expert. I have recently evaluated all possible strategies and tactics for AoK, and present my conclusions.
Before the game
I advise you select a map type such as Highlands, Mongolia, Yucatan or Black Forest. As these are based on real life locations you can gain a crucial advantage by having a map of these places next to you. This will allow you to peruse the map during the game and discover where the best farming areas and all the gold mines are.
Psychological War
Mind games are a key way to gain that crucial advantage in a game. Here are just a few tried and tested approaches that are guaranteed to reap rewards.
1. Inform your enemy of the vast hordes of paladins, champions and catapults that you will be shortly destroying him with. Strike fear into the heart of your enemy with tales of how you will enslave his villagers and devour their pet sheep.
2. Make a solemn vow with your enemy not to cheat. Imagine his face as you flatten his base with Cobra Cars!
3. In a team game, build a huge army and then murder your ally (or allies). Not only does this allow you to take the resources near his base, but the enemy will be so afraid of your ruthlessness he will probably surrender.
4. Constantly spam the enemy’s message box with an endless amount of gibberish and random letters. It will drive him crazy.
5. March into his base with all your villagers, this fearless charge will doubtless cause the enemy to realise he can never defeat such heroic soldiers.
Common Mistakes
Here are some often seen errors.
1. Making too many villagers. Every villager you have is one less paladin you have room for. Unless you make use of the Huns infinite population boost of course. While you are preparing your gigantic paladin army ready for the final attack, delete your villagers one by one so that you can fit in more paladins.
2. Building too many military buildings. Once you have your paladin army asembled those stables are no more use! Delete them to prevent clutter and to allow your two hundred paladins to move around more easily.
3. Attacking before you are ready. Think your ninety paladins are enough to attack with? Wrong! While you are building your army, make good use of bombard towers, castles and dozens of layers of walls to hold off the enemy.
4. Not researching Spies. This gives you vital information on the whereabouts of your enemy, and from which side your two hundred paladins should attack.
Useful Strategies
• CRUSH: Celt Rush
• BRUSH: Bombard Tower Rush
• ARUSH: Axeman Rush
• Fast Feudal
• PUSH: Petard Rush
• SLUSH: Saracen Lumber Camp Rush
• UUUSH: Unique Unit Rush
• RRUSH: Relic Rush
Advanced Tips
1. The siege. If you build a massive wall all around your enemy’s base they will eventually starve and have to surrender.
2. Avoid useless buildings and technologies. Take blacksmiths for example. Can it shoot stuff? No. Can it build stuff? No. What a useless waste of resources and space.
3. It has been mathematically proven that fish traps are the best source of food. Build many.
4. Build a Wonder.
Useful Units
The enemy will be expecting your two hundred paladins and will have built two hundred of his own paladins to counter. Therefore you will want to sometimes use unorthodox units to catch the enemy off guard. Try these combos:
• Two hundred elite teutonic knights
• Two hundred trebuchets (expensive but worth it)
• Two hundred battering rams
• Two hundred monks (convert the entire enemy!)
• Two hundred Furious the monkey Boys
• Two hundred villagers (you can use them to steal the enemy farms!)
• Two hundred Harald Hardraades
• Two hundred trade carts (they’ll never see that coming)
• Two hundred transport ships (enemy will run away, assuming that they are full of paladins)
• Two hundred sheep (for the covert approach)
