You know that I rarely post a thread, so when you see one, you can always consider it an urgent post. I'm currently trying to make a city, a big city, which serves as a capital of an archipelago nation. It's situated in the coastline of a relatively large island, so naturally, it includes a port, and in addition, a military fort. No beach resorts or swimming pools, though. The question is, can you point me out to any campaign/scenario which has one big city, with a well-executed layout, based on the descriptions I stated above (besides the Pretty Town Contest entries)? Or can you at least suggest something constructive, such as adding a Burger King restaurant or putting down a shopping mall? Thanks, folks.

I couldn't swear it was, but wasn't Nicea in the first crusade campaign by sceletar a city that fits most of those descriptions?
It has a castle I know of sorts, and I am pretty positive a port, but isn't on an island so I guess it might not help there.
if I was to suggest one thing, don't make the island flat. Islands are mountains whose peaks come above the sea, so the elevation should be highest in the center and go gradually down to the sea. You can then place the military fort in a high spot I suppose, for added realism.

I think DTI3 and DTI4 by Basse had pretty good islands.
This is Aok you know. I wouldn't recommend it.

My suggestion is just to make the layout logical. Have merchant areas next to the docks, the palace (or governor's residence or whatever) quite close to the military fort, residential areas with maybe a park or two, etc etc. Too many cities in scenarios are just plain weird with no rhyme or reason.

Thanks, thanks.
I guess some experimenting wouldn't hurt.

If I recall correctly, many villages or towns were not only based around a castle or fort or whatever, but also they had a centre of trade or market if you like. So yes make it logical, as Julius pointed out, and also make it defendable and inhabitable.

Thanks, Von.
Perhaps I'll add a full shot of the whole city when it's finished, to know how you guys think.

Another thing to takeinto consideration is how that city operates. For example: Is it a trade city, a mining city, or just a residential area where daily life takes place.
Hope I could help.
