So, why exactly did this forum die off?

Short answer: we grew older.
Long answer: We were much more active in 2008. At that time, we'd change admins every month and one person would create a theme and maybe add a puzzle or a game to go along, and for the most part, that made this place more active and interesting.
Then 2009 came, and we lost a few members, and some of the others became inactive. We held a belief that this team should remain like a town in which "everyone knows everyone," and that might have contributed to the fact that we never really recruited any new members (it might have also been due to the decline in the quality of designers). Changing admins became a chore and nobody had much interest, and so, eventually, we lost activity.
Not to mention that AoK is getting older.

Passage of time. 2009 was the decline, and now 2010 is the dead end, I guess. Shame, for this forum was really nice and the threads were fun to read. I myself before hoped to become part of it.

Well, we're not quite dead yet. De jure that is. Seriously though, project-wise we have a few releases coming up. Gwyndlegard rather soon, Andan's XXXIII, possibly The Jaguar Gold (got to get a hold of Von first though!) and Mashek's newer projects. The forums are quite dead though, which is unfortunate.

Though, it beats me why the members log in regularly if the forums are dead.

Indeed, we're mostly all still around but there are other things in life besides a hobby. I'm still active, although loosely, around the forums and still maintain the Blacksmith alongside Lady Mule.

Real reason: the staff at AoKH fell apart. That caused AoKH to decline bigtime, and as a result any affiliated activity declined. Other reasons include the loss of some key members, and a few we recruited never showed up or only posted here a couple times. Does't have a lot to do with AoK being old, AoKH was booming in early 2009, now it's pathetic.
I've been back a little on AoKH helping Jorgito with some 3d modelling for his mod, and I posted back here a while back but it seems completely dead now. if Basse was interested in trying to revive the team seeing as he still is active designing, I'd be willing to stick around and post. Mashek and Turty are still fairly active at AoKH so we could possibly breath new life into SWS, just a matter of if people want to.

I've only popped in occasionally, and I've been struck by how stagnant AoKH is, as Matty says (although I'm not sure it was all that 'booming' in 2009). There's a massive lack of good projects in le pipeline and BlackForest seems to be le hottest thing there is.

AoKH has indeed died down lately, the past six months especially. There has been quite an influx of newbies this year, Watson here included, but it hasn't been balanced up by older, more experiensed members' activity. Virtually no new projects from the "old crew", except Night Conqueror's Tsubasa's Tale II and Andan's XXXIII, which have both fallen back in the SD&M forum. Still, there is hope. If I recall right we've made a few tries for "revival campaigns" before, posting project threads and getting up hype and interest so that it contaminates other people and has them designing. Not that all our projects actually get finished, but it helps. Matt, I would very much like to get SWS active again. After Gwyndlegard is out and my possible writing contest entry has been sent in, I'll get to it. For one thing I'm thinking we could switch homepages to a more easily administrated one, made in WordPress perhaps? But yeah, we'll see when July comes.

I would be interested in helping as I slowly find more interest in AoK yet again. I also have a few plans for AoKH as well to hopefully make the place less pathetic.BlackForest a bizarre hybrid between a design team and a game clan. Fixed. If we switch homepages, I would like to see something that has the same theme/feel as the forums (e.g. color schemes). The Freewebs page looks a bit out of place. Yeah, I'm complaining about cosmetics again.Ah, but that's the best part! Okay, fine.

Turt, next time make sure you trackback the censored words before you remove them, i.e. switch the translations around (The-le becomes le-the) so that all the old posts are corrected again. Oh, and use "censor whole words" Perhaps so, the main page is a little dark and... well, not too fitting. I'm looking through the existing WordPress skins, I'd rather not mess around with any codes. I know next to nothing about CSS.

By the way, what would "the same colours as the forum" be? Grey-black-white and some odd colour, like red?
I'll give you some examples of skins when I've had time to do something with it.

I imagined the same colors being the ones used in the logo skin (so yes, a light maroon-like red and black and white).

The first thing that should be done is to keep the website up to date. I believe the front page has a projects thread and seems years old. There are many SWS projects to showcase since late last year. I'm always here.

And that is another reason to switch to WordPress, since that is actually user friendly, doesn't take half an hour to do anything in, and I use it pretty much every day anyway.

Oh yes, actual content would be useful as well.

Perhaps so. But as I said, more or less everything is much easier in WordPress than with Freewebs, so it wouldn't be such a pain to actually add some proper content as it is now with Freewebs.

Shame the older members have reduced activity, actually. Ah, yes, because the newbie clique's favourite thing to do is group up under a Studio.
