In this thread you will post anything you like
I'll start by talking about Linux. During the last 4-5 years I have seen a phenomenal increase in the usage of Linux in academic areas. Primarily because it is open source and software developed on it can be freely edited and tweaked by anyone. In computer science especially, it is becoming dominant for research purposes.
I'm afraid I don't know how commonly it is used by end-users though.

Don't forget that Linux is the #1 operating system used for servers.

Not really intellectual, but if you want cutting edge technology, have you guys seen the nike shoes that wirelessly hook up to the iPod Nano? When you slow down running, they change the music to a faster paced song to get you moving again! As far as Linux, it and Leopard are stealing windows users thanks to Vista. Vista has a lot of great ideas, but is such a frustrating OS.

That falls into the category of 'eccentric high priced useless thingys that Americans are stupid enough buy'. I saw a lot of those during my stay there The vista interface is obviously stolen from Mac, I believe they're even fighting a lawsuit about it.

Have you heard about nanosatellites? They're supposed to be kind of like a new revolution.. instead of one bulky large satellite you'll have dozens of mass produced small ones.

Do we have free will or is the universe deterministic?

Good question but there is no proof or disproof (?) of free will. One thing is sure though, the universe is not deterministic. Anyone who has studied chaos theory and quantum mechanics can assert that.

How can you be so sure that beneath quantum level there is not some logical explanation, that we are just unaware of?
Alternatively, it is possible that chaotic systems are not logical, but are the result of the irrational mind of a Creator. In which case it is not deterministic, but we do not have free will either.

Why do you think humans have the intelligence to understand the Universe's mechanics. That's my stance, humans are simply too stupid now and in the near future to have any idea of the universe really.

Yeah, the LHC. This might give us large breakthroughs in physics not seen since god knows when.

Probably six months ago, when the last big science experiment was in the news. Big Science is filler, that's why you see it in the slow news months like August.

Jatayu, I reckon you should subscribe to the journal Private Eye (google it). I do, and I've noticed that you have the same devotion to unearthing things.

While I agree it's wrong to describe Italian fascism as "absolute evil", the ending paragraph was just so wrong. SHAME, ITALY!

Normally I would have dismissed him as a nutcase, but he's a minister..
Been following the webcast of LHC. Since we're still alive, the world hasn't been eaten up by a black hole. ;D

Of course not. It's a load of bollocks... ... because that was just the test to see if the systems are functional. And why are people so against the world being eaten by a black hole. THINK OF THE SCIENTIFIC OPPORTUNTIES! We've never had a black hole so close!

Don't you see? It's not just an experiment, that machine is a giant ultrasonic whistle, built for the single purpose of bringing humongous budgies from outer space to destroy the Earth with lasers shooting from their eyes! There's clear evidense;

Julius, what's this Private Eye journal all about? I haven't searched for it yet, but is it technologically related or more just general information related?

General information and news. It does satire and investigative journalism. All its articles are either jokes or exposes on big business/government etc. It strikes me that it might be your sort of thing.
